Two Pack Epoxy High Gloss Topcoat for a High Gloss Finish

Why do we apply topcoats to our precious metal when most of the substrate’s protection comes from the primer and mid-coats? Topcoats are applied for several reasons, including choice of colour, choice of sheen (gloss), and adding an extra level of protection to the previous coats.

Rustbuster Protect UVR is superior to other epoxy topcoats in that it offers a higher level of colour quality and sheen retention. Unlike traditional epoxies and conventional paints, this colour and sheen won’t fade over time and exposure to UV light. Traditional epoxies tend to chalk over time when exposed to UV light and lighter colours can yellow when hidden from UV light. It’s a tricky balancing act! Well, not any more, as Protect UVR is both UV stable and non-yellowing.

Protect UVR is an extremely high performance two pack high gloss VOC compliant epoxy acrylic finish, providing an excellent topcoat for any of our epoxy primer systems, including EM121, Custom 421, Zinc Rich Epoxy Anode etc. This topcoat can be used over them all.

The standard colour is black but you can enquire about any other colour in RAL or BS standard colours.

  • Non-isocyanate.
  • Colour and gloss retention superior to standard epoxy coatings and topcoats.
  • Non-chalking.
  • Non-yellowing.
  • Long pot life but quick drying.
  • 54% volume of solids.
  • Theoretical spreading rate 10 m2 per litre.
  • Recommended dry fill thickness 60 um.

Exact quantities can vary slightly in the colour tinting process.

Application temperature Can be applied to steel as low as 5c. The steel must be at least 3 degrees above the current dew point. (See our dew point calculator.)
Thinning Use only the epoxy thinner supplied. Thin typically up to 5-10%.
Application Brush or spray.
Spraying Nozzle 1.0mm to 1.5 mm.

Pressure 0.3 – 0.4 MPa (approx. 3 – 4 bar, 44 – 58 psi).

Pot life Pot life is the time from mixing the two components to the point at which the mixed paint is no longer usable. You have 2.5 hours of pot life once mixed at 20c – longer at colder temperatures.
Shelf life We recommend storing upside down in a dry place at around 20c. In these conditions, the product has a shelf life of 12 months.

Do not store below 20c as this can affect performance.

Disposal Allow the mix to cure in your mixing cup and throw it away as dry waste.
Cleaning Clean up with standard thinner or gun wash. Do not thin the paint with standard thinner as this will affect the paint cure.
Safety This is a solvent-borne paint and care should be taken to avoid spray mist or vapour as well as contact between the wet paint and exposed skin and eyes. Avoid at all times inhalation of the spray mist by using a vapour cartridge respirator. Use suitable protective clothing, a spray suit, gloves and goggles.
