Coca-Cola vs Phos-Kleen B
Over the years, we’ve heard it countless times—on the phones, at shows, even shouted from across the garage:
“Why bother with rust removers? I’ll just dunk it in a bottle of Coke! It’s got phosphoric acid, right?”
Well yes, it does. But is it actually strong enough to shift rust before you grow a beard like Gandalf?
We had to find out.
So, we set up a little head-to-head challenge:
Two 1.5mm rusty steel plates, both equally crusty. One soaked in 100mm of good ol’ Coca-Cola, the other in Rustbuster Phos-Kleen B Rust Remover.
We left them to marinate for 24 hours… and then came back to see which one came out shining.

So before you scroll on… what do you reckon?
Will the mighty Coca-Cola bubble its way to victory? Or will Rustbuster Phos-Kleen B prove that it’s more than just a pretty label?

The Results
Both plates side by side—no contest. The winner? Phos-Kleen B, hands down.
Honestly, no surprise there—it’s basically phosphoric acid, soaps and secrets in a bottle. Think of it as the heavyweight champ of rust removers… with a bit of a mean streak.
On closer inspection, Coca-Cola is having a go at the rust—mainly nibbling away at the edges like it’s not quite sure if it’s supposed to be cleaning or just hanging out.
Phos-Kleen didn’t just remove the rust—it went full overachiever and phosphated the surface too.
Flash rust? Not on its watch. That metal’s been sitting pretty for weeks like it’s on holiday.
The Samples are still in the respective solution so we’ll keep this test running and keep you posted.
